Cheer Tryouts: Important Tips

Tryouts are right around the corner!  You have seven days until tryouts, and the stress of all the extra private lessons classes is starting to rattle your nerves.  Now is the time to start focusing on what you need to do to make the skills you will be performing at tryouts as flawless as they can possibly be.  Here are some tips to consider in the week leading up to tryouts.

Have a coach or teammate evaluate our skills.

Get to the gym and have someone experienced and knowledgeable in cheerleading critique the tumbling, jumps, stunts, motions, etc.  That you will throw at tryouts.  A coach or teammate will be able to help you perfect your technique and change anything that you may not have known that you were doing incorrectly.  Sometimes it takes an objective eye to tell you that a skill doesn’t look as pretty or perfected as you think it might be.  Can’t find a coach to help you?  Try videotaping yourself and look to see that your arms and legs are in the correct positions for every move you hit.

Eat Healthy

Make sure you are in top shape for tryouts by maintaining a healthy diet in the week leading up to tryouts.   Eating greasy and fattening foods can make you feel heavy and tired for hours, whereas fruits and veggies will boost your energy and satisfy your appetite.  Drink plenty of water, and lay off the sodas and sugary drinks for the few days leading up to tryouts.  And eating healthy doesn’t stop on tryout day; be sure to pack a small snack of crackers or fruit in your bag for you to munch on at tryouts.

Pack your Bag

Make sure you have everything that you might need for tryouts.  Think through everything you typically need at practice; do you have your deordeorant, your hair ribbons, athletic tape and wrap?  Pack your bags several days in advance so that you have time to remember all the little things that are often forgotten (extra hair ties, makeup brushes, ankle braces, etc. ).  Make sure you organize everything in your bag so that it can be easily accessed once you get to tryouts.

Top 5 Tips:

1.  Be yourself and always stay positive!

2.  Be confident in yourself.

3.  Read the requirements.

4.  Dress appropriately.

5.  Find a way to make yourself stand out!
