Is Cheerleading a Sport?
The question as to whether cheerleading is a sport or not will be answered differently depending on who you talk with. Many cheerleaders feel that because they do all the same things that the players of sports do, then cheerleading should also be a sports. For example, they practice many hours hard on their cheers and routines. Cheerleaders have to stay physically fit having a good exercise program in place. They may not put in as many hours of practice as a player does, but they do put out a lot of time and effort.
Some schools feel that cheerleading should be considered a sport. In Wake County, North Carolina the schools now officially consider it to be a sport. This was a big step for cheerleading. It opened up the door for many who could not have made a cheerleading squad otherwise. The reason for this is because by making it a sport, you make cheerleading less expensive. Parents won’t have to pay for everything which gives a wider variety of students a chance to tryout.
Even though many believe cheerleading should be a sport and some choose to call is as such, nationwide cheerleading is still officially considered an activity in the U.S.
